The Royal Wellington Golf Club is rated as New ZealandтАЩs best private membersтАЩ parkland golf course. Situated on the banks of the Hutt River near Silverstream, the Royal Wellington Golf experience offers an enjoyable and stimulating golfing challenge in a remarkably beautiful setting. There are two courses on site, the 9-hole Terrace Course was introduced by Sloan Morpeth and J.S Watson in 1974, but the Heretaunga Course opened in 1908 by a group of likeminded avid golfers, but as recently as 2013, Greg Turner and Scott MacPherson remodelled the course. To commemorate the 250th anniversary of the R&A, Queen Elizabeth bestowed the Royal decree upon the club in 2004, adding тАШRoyalтАЩ to what was simply тАШWellington Golf ClubтАЩ. Another nearby golf course we recommend you play when visiting Royal Wellington is the Paraparaumu Beach Golf Links, just under 60-minutes’ drive away.
The Heretaunga Course opened in 1908 and has since had various hallmarks of fame. The course has hosted the New Zealand Open on several occasions and the club was the first in New Zealand to be granted the royal status. The course was significantly altered when Greg Turner and Scott MacPherson in 2013; they added 13 new holes and the championship course was completed. The course has large greens with well-manicured grass cuts everywhere you look, exuding a championship-like atmosphere for the entire round. The subtle undulations on the greens coincide with precision-demanding approach shots that requires a great deal of strategy from the tee.
The Heretaunga Course sits on the river flat between the terrace and Hutt River. The ground is either flat or gently undulating and is cut by two water courses, one of which is the Mawaihakona Stream. There are copses of trees, most of which form backdrops to tees and greens. Trees generally demarcate the margins of holes. The course bounds and sometimes intersects with the shorter Terrace nine, giving the feeling of the ultimate golf complex while you play. The revamped course has turned Royal Wellington into an old reputable club to a modern, challengeable parkland layout that has reinvigorated the royal institution.
Courses
Royal Wellington consists of two courses; the 18-hole championship Heretaunga Course and the nine-hole Terrace Course. The former is the recently opened (2014) redesign by Greg Turner and Scott Macpherson. The latter is composed mainly of holes that were part of the former championship course but not used for the redevelopment.
Practice facilities
The club has world class practice facilities, built during and after the renovation of the main course. Adjacent to the first tee and club house are the practice green, chipping green and bunker. Just across the stream is the all-weather driving range, with two covered booths, a huge grass teeing area, and a synthetic surface at the rear for use when the grass is not in play. There is also another small chipping green.
Shop
The golfing needs of visitors and members are taken care of by head professional Scott Puddick and his staff, who book your tee time, organise shoes, clubs and carts for hire and can even give you a lesson. You will find the staff friendly and obliging. The golf shop is open seven days a week.
Pool
The swimming pool, constructed in 1960, is in a fenced-off area to the west of the club house. It has changing sheds, table and chairs and a barbeque and is open for use by members and visitors during the warmer months (October to March). It has solar heating to extend its period of use.
