Founded in 1920, the Royal Queensland Golf Club originally occupied 420 acres of land. It has since shrunk to 240 acres, situated on the Brisbane River. Originally designed by three-time Australian Open winner Carnegie Clark, the golf course was laid out over a mangrove swamp. The Royal Queensland Golf Course was redesigned by Michael Clayton for a 2007 re-opening. The Golf Course hosted the 2021 Australian PGA Championship. Currently rated as the 22nd best golf course in Australia by Golf Digest, the Royal Queensland Golf Club is a must-play for golfers visiting Brisbane. The course has hosted three Australian Open Championships and four Australian Amateur Championships. It lies north-east of the CBD and other courses such as Indooroopilly and Brisbane Golf Club.
The Golf Course at Royal Queensland Golf Club places emphasis on strategic golf. The course resembles Melbourne’s famous sandbelt golf courses; laid out over relatively flat terrain with large, uneven bunkers littering the ground. Mike Clayton’s redesign in 2007 focussed on the course’s greens and bunkers. Most of the golf course is open and this leaves a certain blank canvas perspective when approaching the course. The open fairways and large greens are laced with nuances that demand a level of strategy from the first tee. The subtleness of the course makes it renowned in the international golf community.
With greens shaped large like Royal Melbourne, there are preferred lines of play when approaching the greens. Golfers playing into the greens must be aware of where they place their tee and fairway shots or a difficult pitch will ensue. Clayton’s redesign focussed primarily on the philosophy of Alister MacKenzie’s golf course designs: strategy is vital. Golfers who pride themselves on course management will find Royal Queensland a true test and fun experience; big-hitters and go-getters will likely get left behind.
The Royal Queensland Golf Club is a members club that allows visitors on pre-arranged days. The clubhouse facilities include changing rooms, lockers, a restaurant and pro shop. The pro shop is stocked with a very broad range of apparel, equipment and accessories from the best golf brands including Footjoy, Nike, Titleist, Callaway and Taylor Made.
The golf practice facilities at Royal Queensland Golf Club are fantastic. It features a full-length driving range with ample bays, a practice putting green, and a short-game chipping area with practice bunker. Golfers have plenty of space to practice at Royal Queensland Golf Club.
