Royal Lytham & St Annes is the northernmost golf course on EnglandтАЩs Golf Coast, residing 90 minutes by car from Liverpool, near the coastal town of Lytham & St Annes. Founded in 1886, Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club has hosted 11 Open Championships, the last in 2012 which was won by South African legend Ernie Els. The famous golf course is often experienced by visitors who also play Royal Liverpool, and Royal Birkdale. The Golf Club has a handicap limit for visitors that is 21 for males and 30 for females. A valid handicap certificate from the playerтАЩs home club is required.
With over 174 strategically place bunkers, you know youтАЩve come to a true links golf course. Originally designed by the sea in 1886, there has been plenty of residential development since and there are now many houses between. The course is still prone to strong winds from the Irish Sea, and a high level of accuracy is demanded by the golf course. The 18-hole route is laid out over mainly flat terrain with small undulations. The challenges when the breeze isnтАЩt blowing, come from the beastly pot bunkers that pepper the course, as well as uniquely shaped fairways and large areas of rough between tees and fairways. There is enough undulation to make your ball roll far from the green if the wind is prevailing.
Nothing short of your best game is required to score well at Royal Lytham & St Annes. Although seemingly laid out over flat terrain, the nuances in the design and layout, combined with the prevailing wind, make Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Course a formidable test of links golf, with only Carnoustie Golf Club thought to be tougher. Watch out for the artificial and natural sand dunes that are arrayed over the golf course. The greens too are compact, undulating and lightning-quick!
Clubhouse
Hosting visiting golfers for well over a century, the Clubhouse at Royal Lytham & St Annes is iconic in the sporting world. The interior is designed from a distant glory of the sport, and the hospitality you will receive from staff and members is universally praised. The restaurant and bar overlook the 18th hole and serves mouth-watering food year-round. Inside the Clubhouse, you will find a snooker room, the well-stocked pro-shop, locker room and various displays of golfing memorabilia.
Practice Facilities
The golf practice facilities at Royal Lytham & St Annes consist of a driving range, putting green and short-game area with a practice bunker. The driving range doesnтАЩt get too crowded though some days in summer might see you divert to the short-game area before your round.
