Poppy Hills is a fascinating trail that meanders through a forgotten corner of Pebble Beach. Discover a rustic and rugged experience along the forest floor, through the pine straw and native natural sandy areas that weave into each hole. Take in surprising and stunning ocean views from vistas well worth the hike. Recently finding itself the ranking of #62 in Golf Digest’s Top 100 Courses that you can play, expect to find yourself on championship ready turf, flawless bent-grass greens, and perfectly manicured surroundings. The new ranking was the last piece of the puzzle to solidify the fact that Poppy Hills belongs in Pebble Beach and is a must for anyone visiting Pebble Beach or the Monterey Peninsula. Nearby golf destinations include Pebble Beach, Quail Lodge, The Links at Spanish Bay and Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Club.
Enjoy firm, fast and fun conditions – fairways unencumbered by rough, shots defined only by what your imagination can dream up, glassy bent-grass greens purer than any you’ll find on the Monterey Peninsula. Playing through forests of pine and cypress, Poppy Hills affords some protection from Monterey’s ocean breezes but still proffers occasional views of the Pacific. The 6,833-yard/ 6,248-metre layout boasts lakes and vertical hazards (trees) en-route to large, rolling, compartmentalised greens guarded by water and sand. The greens were inspired by those at Augusta National. Deep, strong bunkering close to the putting surfaces demands short game finesse. A number of sharp doglegs force players to shape their shots. Five par three and five par fives (including back-to-back par fives at holes nine and ten) lend additional interest.
Poppy Hills, home of the Northern California Golf Association and the hidden jewel of Pebble Beach. Immersed in the history of Pebble Beach Resort, the magnificence of Spyglass Hill and the breathtaking views a Spanish Bay, Poppy Hills stands tall in the centre of them all providing guests with what golf course architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. calls “the closest you can get to playing golf in a National Park.” The team at Poppy Hills welcomes you to put the busy world behind you and surround yourself in nature enjoying each uniquely crafted hole chiselled through the towering Monterey Pines of the Del Monte Forest, offering sneak peaks of the beautiful and iconic Monterey Bay and a chance to enjoy watching playful young deer munching on a freshly sprung California Poppy.
Porter’s in the Forest
Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach has created a completely different golf course dining experience by transforming its old clubhouse café into a beautifully renovated restaurant called Porter’s in the Forest. The restaurant includes a panoramic view of the Del Monte Forest, a re-imagined, farm-to-table menu, unique wine and cocktail lists, comfortable leather chairs, outdoor dining and fire pits. Porter’s in the Forest is a place where discriminating diners (golfers and non-golfers, locals and tourists) expect something deliciously different.
Porter’s is a casual dining experience elevated by Chef Jaime Santiago’s passion for taking dishes and making them uniquely his own. Formerly the Sous chef at Porter’s in the Forest, working under Chef Johnny De Vivo, and Banquet Chef at Casanova in Carmel, Santiago heads a recently renovated dining room with 180-degree panoramic vistas of famed Poppy Hills Golf Course & Del Monte Forest, beautiful outdoor dining area with fire pits and glass enclosures, redesigned menu’s, and the best golf course snack bar in the industry.
Golf Lessons
If you’ve had enough of taking advice from your buddies or failing to translate what you learned from the Golf Channel, it may be time for a lesson. The professional instructors will design lessons specific to your needs to help you break those bad habits and make new ones that you can head out onto the course with confidence! They will learn what your goals are and come up with a realistic game plan that will help you meet those goals. In their lessons, they can address:
· Full swings
· Putting strokes
· Short game
· Custom club and putter fitting
· Course knowledge
Poppy Hills Golf Club has a TaylorMade studio for one-on-one fittings to really find the best clubs and shapes for your swing. Properly fit equipment can lead to improved play and better scores. If you haven’t been fit before, or you haven’t played in a while, a session at the Poppy Hills TaylorMade Studio is a must. Be sure to check out the pro shop before or after your round to grab all the essentials.
