Of the many courses at Pinehurst, Donald Ross’s No.2 golf course is the most renowned, coveted and celebrated golf course both in the region and in Donald Ross’s career. Having hosted more single golf championships than any course in America including the U.S Open and the Ryder Cup Matches, the No. 2 course at Pinehurst Resort, North Carolina is a masterpiece of golf course design. Designed in 1907, it is a testament to Donald Ross that the course has kept its status as a world leader for over a century. Two other notable golf courses at Pinehurst are No. 4 and Pinehurst No. 8.
The latest addition was in 2011 by Bill Coore & Ben Crenshaw, who completed a restoration of the course, returning the natural areas and strategic shot values that Ross originally intended, adapting the course to modern technological gains made in golf clubs and player ability. The result is an enduring Championship course that should be on every avid golfer’s bucket-list. The course also features on Golf Digest’s World Top 100 Golf Courses.
Donald Ross’s greatest achievement was Pinehurst No. 2. After designing it in 1907, he continually maintained its elegance until his death in 1948. Built on a scrap of wasteland not dissimilar to England’s Sunningdale, the Pinehurst No. 2 golf course is flatter, with most of its renown attributed to its undulating greens. A noticeable addition by Coore & Crenshaw was the exhumation of the Bermuda Grass fairways, replacing it in 2011 with the native hardpan sand that is dotted with pine needles and clumps of wiregrass, which gives its resemblance to the wastelands of heather found around Sunningdale’s Old Course.
The Pinehurst No. 2 golf course in North Carolina is firm, fast and challenging. Drawing influence also from Donald Ross’s first major golf course design at Scotland’s Royal Dornoch, the No. 2 course features green undulations and domes, which is a trademark feature of Ross’s golf courses. They are far and away the biggest challenge to the average player’s scorecard, but be sure to watch out for the sandy wastelands that can seriously wreak havoc on saving par. The scenery of the course surrounded by Pinehurst’s other golf courses and surrounding pine trees everywhere you look is surreal. It is a course that is enjoyed in all kinds of weather; a real testament in the world of golf.
Practice Facilities
Donald Ross is credited with inventing the driving range, so it is without surprise that Pinehurst should have one of the best practice facilities in America A full-length driving range with over 50 bays, along with multiple putting greens, chipping areas and practice bunkers are all on display for golfers to utilise when at Pinehurst Resort.
Pinehurst Clubhouse
A spacious veranda overlooking the eighteenth green, Pinehurst No. 8’s clubhouse is the ideal place for casual dining or relaxing in a rocking chair with a drink after a memorable round. Plantation arches enclose the large veranda, with scenic views over the 18th hole and lush surrounds. The dining room is open daily from 11:00 to 16:00, offering a deli-style menu generous portions. These dishes include sandwiches, wraps, burgers, nachos, craft and premium beer, wine and desserts.
Golf Academy
One of the finest in America, Pinehurst Golf Academy with a low 4:1 student-to-teacher ratio means that you will receive plenty of personal attention. The instructors are led by Eric Alpenfels, a PGA Master Professional whose research into training techniques has been published a number of times in Golf Magazine. The tuition programs are designed for both avid golfers and those new to the game. The editors of Golf Digest labelled Pinehurst Golf Academy as one of the best in America.
Caddie Services
Caddies are highly recommended at Pinehurst and walking with a local who has in-depth knowledge can be one of the most pleasant experiences of your stay. Caddies are available for all Pinehurst courses but are particularly advised for No. 2 & No. 4. You can get a Single Premium Caddie, Double bad Caddie or a Forecaddie.
Thistle Dhu Putting Course
Pinehurst’s 18-hole putting course is named Thistle Dhu after James Barber, creator of the first miniature golf course in America. 18-holes of mind-bending journeys specially designed to entertain everyone in the family, from the beginners to scratch players. Play is free to resort guests, just bring a ball and putter.
