Kooyonga Golf Club owes its existence to a serendipitous moment in 1922 when a train strike forced South Australian golf pioneer H.L. “Cargie” Rymill to take a tram to Henley Beach instead. During that fateful journey, Rymill spotted a “For Sale” sign on a tract of undulating swampland and sand dunes known as May’s Paddock. Recognizing its extraordinary potential for golf, he immediately acquired the land and conceived what would become his crowning achievement. Within months, the first nine holes opened for play in May 1923, with the full 18-hole layout officially completed by June 1924. Rymill, a devoted student of golf architecture who carried Dr. Alister MacKenzie’s design principles throughout the project, designed the entire course himself – a layout that remains largely unchanged nearly a century later.
Located in Lockleys, just 15 minutes from Adelaide’s central business district and five minutes from Adelaide Airport, Kooyonga has established itself as one of Australia’s premier championship golf courses. The club has hosted six Australian Opens (five men’s and one women’s), including legendary victories by Norman Von Nida (1950), Gary Player (1958 and 1965 with Jack Nicklaus as runner-up), Arnold Palmer (1961), and Peter Thomson (1972). Most recently, the club hosted the 2018 Women’s Australian Open won by world number one Jin Young Ko, with the tournament scheduled to return in March 2026. The course has also welcomed golf icons including Walter Hagen in the 1930s and Greg Norman, who won the South Australian Open there twice. Among its distinguished membership roll are names like Sir Donald Bradman, tennis legend Mark Woodforde, and cricket great Rod Marsh. Currently ranked 18th in Australian Golf Digest’s 2024 Top 100 and 26th in Golf Australia Magazine’s rankings, Kooyonga continues to earn accolades for its timeless design, impeccable conditioning, and championship pedigree.
Kooyonga presents a classic traditional-style championship layout that exemplifies strategic golf architecture from the golden age of course design. Set on naturally undulating sandy terrain in Adelaide’s celebrated sandbelt, the par-72 course measures 6,308 meters (6,908 yards) and features Santa Ana couch fairways with bent grass greens that are maintained to world-class standards year-round. The routing showcases Rymill’s exceptional understanding of working with natural landforms rather than imposing upon them – a philosophy inspired by his devotion to MacKenzie’s design principles and evident in every hole’s strategic variety and character.
One of Kooyonga’s most intriguing characteristics is its unusual sequencing: the course opens with consecutive par-5s (holes 1 and 2), each playing completely differently in length, character, and direction, followed later by back-to-back par-3s at the 14th and 15th holes. This unconventional rhythm speaks to a designer who prioritized utilizing the land’s natural features over adhering to conventional scorecard balance. The opening hole presents a classic strategic dilemma: aggressive players can challenge bunkers down the right for a shorter approach, while conservative play takes the long way around. The par-5 2nd is considered one of Australia’s finest holes, a reachable beauty where tree-lined fairways and heavy bunkering at crucial decision points demand precision on every shot. The course is nearby Glenelg, Royal Adelaide and The Grange.
The course constantly challenges golfers to play their best shots across a wide range of shot types. The celebrated par-3 14th hole, at 145 meters, is considered one of South Australia’s signature short holes—an elevated green guarded by deep bunkers and exposed to prevailing winds, with a tee box encapsulated by trees that makes club selection extraordinarily difficult. Miss long and the ball runs down steep slopes behind the green; miss anywhere else and you’re likely in sand. Wind is an ever-present factor at Kooyonga, making the course index remarkably fluid depending on breeze direction—a characteristic that adds to its enduring appeal and championship credentials.
The bunkering at Kooyonga is distinctive and strategic, with the club preserving the look and feel of Rymill’s original hazards featuring characteristic 1920s-era faces that “sit up” and present themselves prominently to golfers. These more pronounced lips create both visual intimidation and genuine penalty when found. Recent enhancement work by architects Neil Crafter and Paul Mogford (who have overseen improvements since 2012) has focused on bringing consistency to the bunkering, integrating native vegetation, widening fairways selectively, and implementing a rolling greens replacement program—all while respecting and enhancing Rymill’s original vision. The course is framed by towering gum trees and native plantings that create natural definition without crowding playing corridors, resulting in a layout that is testing but fair, beautiful but challenging, and endlessly rewarding for golfers who play with both head and hands.
Kooyonga Golf Club completed a multimillion-dollar clubhouse refurbishment in 2021, transforming the facility into a stunning modern building that seamlessly blends contemporary elegance with traditional golf club character. The result is a world-class amenity befitting one of Australia’s top-ranked courses, featuring sweeping panoramic views of the golf course from every dining area and terrace—offering guests the closest experience to being on the course without actually playing.
The clubhouse provides exceptional dining and social spaces, including multiple dining rooms with floor-to-ceiling bifold doors that open onto expansive terraces overlooking the fairways. The facility houses multiple bars (including a dedicated private function bar), air-conditioned comfort throughout, and operable walls in dining areas that allow flexible configuration for various event sizes. The club’s culinary program has earned particular praise, with first-class cuisine and exceptional service making Kooyonga a sought-after venue beyond golf. The member locker rooms were completely refurbished and extended as part of the 2021 renovation, providing premium amenities maintained to the highest standards.
Practice facilities at Kooyonga are comprehensive and world-class, including a full driving range, dedicated short game practice area with bunkers, multiple putting greens, and chipping greens that allow members and visitors to hone every aspect of their game. The professional shop is fully stocked with premium equipment and apparel, operated by PGA professionals who provide coaching services utilizing the latest instruction technology. Golf lessons and junior clinics are regularly available, with specialized programs for women new to golf and school holiday clinics for young players. Club hire is available, and while electric golf carts can be hired with a medical certificate, pull buggies are readily provided and walking is encouraged on this beautifully walkable layout.
Beyond golf, Kooyonga has established itself as one of Adelaide’s premier function and event venues. The club hosts corporate trade days, wedding receptions, birthday celebrations, seminars, conferences, and special events in elegant spaces that accommodate groups from intimate gatherings to large celebrations. The wedding facilities are particularly impressive, with a private wing featuring a light-filled function room accommodating up to 150 banquet-style, 200 on long tables, or 300 cocktail-style including dance floor. Couples can use the manicured garden setting for ceremonies and enjoy exclusive access to private bars, terraces, and bathrooms in the function wing. Golf buggies are available for wedding photography on the picturesque course and by the scenic lake on the 17th hole. With ample free parking in a private, secure car park and proximity to the city, Glenelg beaches, and Adelaide Airport, Kooyonga Golf Club offers a complete experience where championship golf meets world-class hospitality.
