Situated on an uninterrupted patch of coastline in Scotland’s Kingdom of Fife lies Kingsbarns Golf Links. The 18-hole championship golf course should need no introduction as it is widely considered the second-best golf course in Fife after St Andrews’ Old Course. The highly-sought-after name brings international golfers from Australia, the United States, and almost anywhere golf is played. Only 6 miles from St Andrews, Kingsbarns Golf Links is situated on prime land by the sea; it is a record-breaking golf destination almost unparalleled in Scotland. Kingsbarns begins with a terrific starting par four that tumbles toward the sea and immediately introduces golfers to the views and the layout’s classic links characteristics. The remaining holes are arranged in a couple of rough figure eights, and largely follow the shape of the coastline. The best stretch of golf comes through the middle of the round, with the short par four 6th a particular favourite. Its green is simple and open for golfers able to drive onto the narrow right shelf, but blind and more difficult for those bailing down the safer left side. The Kingsbarns golf course influenced Bandon Dunes’ recently opened Sheep Ranch golf course, despite opening in 2000. The golf course appears centuries old, though the timelessness of links lands enables the golf course nestle seamlessly into the landscape.
Also excellent are short holes at the 2nd, 8th and 13th and the dramatic par five 12th, which sweeps around the shoreline. The closing stretch, from the beach-side par three 15th, is equally memorable and ends with a very strong par four that demands a bold approach across a burn into a steeply tilted green. Kingsbarns is an important addition to the ancient links courses in this area. It’s one of only a few true links courses to be built recently along Scotland’s coastline, so it is just as well that this course is a cracker and deserves its status as one of the greatest links courses in the world.
The clubhouse was designed to incorporate comfort, efficiency and an understated interior elegance that serves as a salute to the history and traditions of the game. Carefully located within the golf playing area, it provides dramatic and panoramic views over the golf course, sea and beyond. Facilities within the clubhouse include, Golf Shop, Food and Beverage Lounge, Ladies and Gentlemen’s Locker Rooms, Restrooms. An outdoor patio area and viewing balconies are also featured.
The clubhouse is completely spike friendly. The food and beverage lounge offers visitors the opportunity to relax and unwind in comfort, choosing from over-stuffed leather armchairs to the more conventional solid top table and chairs. A menu offering freshly prepared light snacks to main course meals is available throughout the day, together with a fully licensed beverage facility. Smoking is not permitted within the clubhouse.
