Located on England’s Golf Coast near Southport in Lancashire, Hillside Golf Club is an 18-hole championship links course. It falls inside England’s top 20 golf courses and is considered an undiscovered gem when compared to its regal neighbours Royal Birkdale, Royal Lytham & St Annes, or Royal Liverpool. The original Hillside Golf Club was founded in 1911; it has staged various championships including the Women’s Amateur, British PGA Matchplay, Brabazon Trophy and The Amateur. The Hillside Golf Club has been an Open Championship qualifying course since 2014, which is a testament to its challenge. It has most recently hosted the 2019 British Masters organised by the European Tour. A links layout, the Hillside golf experience offers an exhilarating round of golf surrounded by beautiful scenery, all with a humble façade.
England’s Golf Coast is home to the finest stretch of links golf in Britain. Hillside Golf Club is located between Southport & Ainsdale and Royal Birkdale. The three Championship golf courses comprise some of the best 54-holes of golf you will find in the United Kingdom. Hillside’s layout changed significantly in the 1960s when Fred Hawtree remodelled the course and changed the back nine completely. The fairways and greens are relatively tight, playing along almost flat ground with small undulations on the front nine. The back nine sees heavily oscillating sand dunes with the golf course feeding into these rolling hills.
The golf course is a great challenge, its surface is hard and numerous pot bunkers are deep. Add in the coastal breeze from the Irish Sea with undulating terrain & long rough, and you have a formidable links golf course. The golf course is lined with trees which offers an interesting addition to the links route. The third and eleventh holes are favoured for their challenge and demand for strategy. Clubhouse
The Clubhouse at Hillside Golf Club overlooks the putting green and 18th hole. It is a two-storeyed building dating back to the 1930s; it was most recently refurbished in 2018 and the interior is modern. The second story features an outdoor terrace overlooking the golf facilities and is a good place to watch golfers complete their round. Inside, you will find a well-stocked pro shop, locker rooms and a great bar & restaurant open all day.
Practice Facilities
The practice facilities at Hillside are superb. There is a large putting green in front of the clubhouse as well as a short-game chipping area and long-game area to hone your skill before teeing off.
