Hastings Golf Club in Napier, New Zealand’s North Island, is located in Bridge Pa. It is colloquially known as Bridge Pâ to the locals. The golf club is consistently ranked as one of New Zealand’s best and complements nearby Cape Kidnappers golf course well. The club was founded in 1898, making it one of the country’s oldest, though the current site was only in use since 1912. The course was designed by Charles Redhead, who has left a great legacy in New Zealand’s golf scene after emigrating from England in 1924; he also designed the nearby Napier Golf Club. Redhead contributed to Hastings Golf Club over the years, and the result is a stunning parkland layout of championship quality.
A real parkland gem, Hastings golf course is both a delight to the eyes and fun challenge. It has a par of 72. The golf course has various tee boxes to choose from, so golfers can choose their challenge. It is arguably the best parkland golf course in Hawke’s Bay. One challenge to look out for is the greens. Most are multi-tiered or have deceptively challenging slopes. Accurate fairway-to-green wedge shots are required to land the ball on the right side of the greens.
The toughest hole at Hastings golf course is the fifth, named ‘Flaxmere.’ A par-4, Flaxmere measures 382 metres and featured a tiered green, coupled with a sharp fairway dogleg that gives a real risk-reward scenario. Laid out over mostly flat terrain, the course’s main challenges come in the form of tight fairways, sloping greens and doglegs. Overall, Hastings golf course is a great value-for-money experience.
Practice Facilities
The golf practice facilities at Hastings Golf Club consist of an undercover full-length driving range. Golfers will also enjoy a four-hole mini-course to practice your swing or settle bets after your round. The mini-course costs NZD $10 per person, so it is a great opportunity for juniors to have a go if learning the game, or if a golfer is time-conscious. A putting green lies directly in front of the clubhouse. The chipping area features two practice bunkers that simulate the champion golf course.
Clubhouse & Pro Shop
The clubhouse features a magnificent eatery named Bunkers Café, which commands superb views over the golf course. The Hastings Golf Club staff are hospitable to members and guests alike, so post-round refreshments will feel enticing. The Pro Shop at Hastings Golf Club is large and features a diverse range of equipment, apparel and accessories. You can even call ahead for items to be ready for you when you play. The Pro Shop also has a free club fitting service to match your clubs to your stance, posture and physique; something that is welcomed by every amateur golfer.
