Golf has been played over the links at Gullane for more than 350 years. Today, Gullane Golf Club is one of Scotland’s most prestigious member clubs, mixing the finest tradition with some of the most admired natural links land in the world. The land for the three courses has superb turf and a climate that allows all-year-round golf with dramatic coastal views and a golfing challenge to savour. The three courses are known by numbers which reflect their age: Gullane No. 1 (1884) has a long history of hosting national and international championship golf events.
Gullane No. 2 (2898) was laid out by the legendary Willie Park Jnr and has also been used for Open Championship qualifying as well as the Seniors Open Amateur. Gullane No. 3 (1910) was also laid out by Willie Park Jnr and is the shortest of the three courses, but it provides a wonderful test based on shot-making skills rather than power. Overall, Gullane offers a unique range of golfing experiences for members and visitors alike, combining a major role in the history of golf in Scotland, great golfing conditions, and a truly spectacular environment.
Enjoying some of the best views of all three Gullane courses, Gullane No. 3 looks across Aberlady Bay to the Firth of Forth and Edinburgh beyond. Spectacular and tricky, Gullane No. 3 is a course that demands a deft touch and a cool head. Forget the modest yardage; this is a course for straight hitting shot-makers.
Designed by two-time Open Champion Willie Park Jr, Gullane No. 3 celebrated its centenary in 2010 and has matured to become a much-loved destination for visiting golfers. Favoured with the same impeccable links turf and smooth running (albeit smaller) greens as its older neighbours, Gullane No. 3 is maintained to the same high standards from tee to green. This is no soft option, despite the lack of yards the course still presents the classic Gullane links challenge of strategic course management, sloping greens and numerous bunkers to be avoided – all played out in stunning scenery.
The type of grass is predominantly Bent on the fairways and Fescue on the greens. There are 67 bunkers on the course and the average green size is 450m Sq. There are 150-yard posts on each hole which mark the distance to the middle of the green.
Members’ Clubhouse
The Members’ Clubhouse opened its doors again in early June 2015 after an 18-month restoration. “The Members’ Clubhouse has been a landmark on Gullane’s skyline for nearly 100 years, so it was imperative that any changes would not affect the look of the town,” said David Morgan, the Club’s Secretary. “Instead we wanted to retain the exterior of the clubhouse while revitalizing the interior to accommodate a busy, modern club with all of its demands. I am pleased to say this was achieved.” The 18-month project saw Gullane’s iconic clubhouse close to both members and the public while the extensive restoration work took place. The clubhouse now incorporates flexible, interlinked social spaces while retaining the character of the original layout.
Visitors’ Clubhouse
Opened in 1993 by Ryder Cup Captain Bernard Gallacher, the Visitors’ Clubhouse is situated next to the practice ground and the first tees of No. 2 and No. 3 courses. For visitors and members alike, this is an ideal meeting place where the buzz around the tees is palpable and banter in the bar is always good-natured. With comfortable dining facilities and well-appointed locker rooms, the Visitors’ Clubhouse provides convenient access to all three courses as well as all the facilities you would expect at a major golf complex. For many, the Visitors’ Clubhouse is the ideal starting point for a great golfing experience. After your game, you can relax in the lounge bar overlooking the courses and discuss the challenges of the links. Soft spikes are allowed. You can also order from a wide variety of foods ranging from snacks, daily specials and a la carte meals. There is a battery charging area in the bag drop area as you enter the Clubhouse.
Practice Facilities
Members and visitors playing the course that day are welcome to use the club’s practice facilities during their visit. A full-length range is located next to the Visitors’ Clubhouse with practice putting greens conveniently positioned next to the 1st tees of all three courses. The short-game area, practice putting green and training bunker are situated at the far end of the range. There will be occasions when the practice range is not available and notice of this will be displayed at the No. 2/3 Starter’s Box adjacent to the range. – Range balls are included in the green fee rates.
