Gailes has hosted major championship tournaments through the years and was designed by legendary golf architect Willie Park Jnr of Musselburgh. It was opened in 1892 by Glasgow Golf Club, the 9th oldest golf club in the world. Its West Coast setting and fabulous condition make it ideal for summer and winter golf in Scotland. It is a world-class links course which attracts players from every corner of the globe. Gailes Links is a championship links course in Ayrshire close to Open venues at Royal Troon and Turnberry.
Glasgow Gailes course designer, former Open Championship winner, Willie Park always believed this links to be one of his best creations. The classic layout is tough, fair and traditionally Scottish, wild heather and gorse define the fairways and the greens are guarded by strategically placed bunkers. Sandy Lyle, former Open and Masters Champion describes the course as “one of the world’s truly great tests of links golf’ and it has been selected by the R&A as a final qualifying venue for The Open Championship every time it has been at Royal Troon and Turnberry. Nearby golf courses include Western Gailes, Dundonald Links and Kilmarnock Barassie Links.
Gailes Links is a great test of golf whilst the kinder medium tees provide a fine test for players of all abilities. It is simply traditional links at its best. The challenge starts with a steady stream of four consecutive par fours followed by the signature hole, a par five dog-leg with out-of-bounds to the right and a treacherous green that’s guarded by strategically placed sand traps. It then lets up with a neat par three, only to bite back with another demanding run of five par fours. With its undulating fairways, fine greens and subtle qualities, it is an honest test of golfing skills in true links fashion.
Relax after play in the comfort of the clubhouse or outdoor terrace overlooking the course. The clubhouse is open all day serving breakfast and a great choice of hot and cold dishes including lighter options such as soup and sandwiches. Th club professional is John Greaves, whose assistant is Nick Walton, both of which are members of the PGA.
Gailes Links provides clubs, golf buggies, electric PowaKaddies, and trollies for single rounds or whole days. Caddies may be booked for individual play and can also enhance corporate golf days by providing local knowledge of the course. Golf equipment that’s stocked include Ping, Titleist, Mizuno & Callaway.
