Located on the Chanonry Peninsula in the ‘Black Isle’ within the Moray Firth, the Fortrose and Rosemarkie Golf Club enjoys being the 15th oldest recorded club in the world, having been operating since 1793. The club was awarded in 2017 and 2018 as being Scotland’s Best Golfing Experience (value for money). It has also been ranked amongst the World Top 50 by Golf World and had many other honourable mentions. It’s a scenic half-hour drive from Inverness, and well worth the drive. The course is open all year round and they welcome golfers from all over the world to play on the fantastic links course which has hosted no less than 10 National Championships since 2010. We recommend you play this golf course in conjunction with other nearby courses including Nairn, Castle Stuart (Cabot Highlands), and Royal Dornoch.
The course is fantastic in both visual and golf dimensions. The greens are not just fast but also deceptive, with tight fairways and strategically placed bunkers throughout the course: the trademark of the all-time master of bunkering, James Braid. Whilst the course is playing to its full capacity, members, their guests and any golfers visiting Fortrose & Rosemarkie links can play from any tees. The choice is your own, so you can of course play from the yellow, white or the new black tees which will add to the experience of playing on a true Scottish Links Golf Course. Ladies are advised to play from the red tees. Visiting golfers with a higher handicap are advised to play from the yellow or white tees. The golf club characterises traditional Scottish links with its long history as one of the world’s oldest clubs. Notable courses designed by James Braid include the Kings Course at Gleneagles Resort and Blairgowrie’s Rosemount Course.
The 5th hole is a par-3 which is named after the Icehouse which is a stone-built ice-house that resembles the remnants of a once-thriving salmon fishing industry in the area where the fish were stored once caught in the 19th and 20th centuries. Other scenic notables include a dolphin colony that’s located near the 4th and 5th holes, close to the lighthouse at Chanonry Point. The dolphins can clearly be seen by the golfers who play on the links on a daily basis.
The history of the course also extends from the 1st to 4th holes, where Fort George lies directly across the water. The fort was constructed following the battle of Culloden in 1746 to house government troops who were tasked with bringing the Highland Clans into line. During World War II the course was requisitioned by the military authorities for training purposes. Sea landing tactics were practised along the beach in preparation for the D-Day landings. The concrete bollards used as part of this exercise can still be seen to the left side of the 3rd and 4th fairways.
The facilities are among the best in Scotland and include a bar, restaurant, locker rooms, pro shop, a 450-yard practice area with long and short game capacity, practice bunkers, a chipping area with grass and artificial options also accommodate covered bays, practice nets, with a ball machine and two practice putting greens. In terms of rentals: push trolleys, electric trolleys, golf carts and caddies are also available for hire.
Chanterelle Restaurant
Chanterelle Kinkell first opened its doors on 1st October 2016 and since that time the business grew substantially, with both locals and guests from further afield enjoying their delicious lunches, afternoon teas and evening meals. Their food brought together the best of classic and contemporary Scottish fare and they strived to use local produce as much as possible. As well as using local ingredients in their dishes, they wanted local people to be at the heart of everything they did. Lynsey wanted to succeed at every opportunity whilst having a successful busy restaurant for the Black Isle with returning customers and they gained a lot of experience having a variety of choice on menus to suit all requirements with a great knowledge in different cuisines. It has a breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner menu with a wide range of drinks.
