Located on England’s Golf Coast, near Royal Birkdale Golf Club & Formby Hall Golf Resort, Formby Golf Club provides an enriching golf experience on England’s west coast. Just half an hour north of Liverpool by car, Formby Golf Club is adjacent to the Formby Ladies Golf Club. Both golf courses are within walking distance from each other and offer 36-holes of links golf. Many golfing greats have contributed to the Championship golf course including Willie Park Jr, James Braid, Harry Colt and Donald Steel. The Club was founded in 1884, with various changes from the greats occurring in 1922, 1933 and most recently in the 70s by Donald Steel who took the course length to over 7,000 yards from the tips. Formby Golf Club is lesser-known than its ‘Royal’ neighbours, but the links design, flanked by tall pine trees creates a truly stunning experience. Both Formby Men’s and Ladies Golf Clubs allow play over the weekend with a selection of visitor tee times, and there is availability throughout the week at both courses. The Club has hosted a plethora of Championships including the Arnold Palmer Cup, Senior Amateur, Curtis Cup, English Men’s Amateur and the European Ladies Amateur.
Formby Golf Club is one of the Golf Coasts’ most interesting championship layouts. Consisting of a links design with plenty of dunes reminiscent of the great Irish and Scottish golf courses, the intriguing part is the forested areas between many holes. Both Formby Golf Club and Formby Ladies are nestled between the town of Formby and the Irish Sea. Formby is a great course to play after the traditional links courses of Southport & Ainsdale, Royal Liverpool and Royal Birkdale. The 18-hole route is no walk in the part: bunkering is strategic and the course has been redesigned by many golfing greats, meaning it has had years of tinkering to become an exhilarating golf break.
Well-known golf architects Mackenzie & Ebert have commenced the latest round of works in 2020 that involves reshaping some new bunkers and tees, altering fairway widths and shapes, and tinking with the aesthetics throughout the golf course. Formby Golf Club is relatively unknown as it lives in the shadows of its ‘Royal’ neighbours on the Golf Coast, as well as Formby Hall Golf Resort just over the road, however, we thoroughly recommend you play this golf course when visiting the Liverpool area. You are guaranteed a unique golf experience at Formby Golf Club.
Practice Facilities
The Formby Golf Club was established in the 1800s, back when practice facilities didn’t exist. The driving range is relatively small, but it also has a practise putting green to warm up before play. Tuition is also available 7 days a week, including on-course teaching as they take you through the golf course, perfecting your game.
Clubhouse
The traditional clubhouse at Formby provides a very comfortable area to relax. Choose from the Golfers’ Bar and Hall Bar. The smaller Hall Bar is located on the ground floor and is located directly across from the locker room. The Golfers’ Bar is accessible from the entrance hall. The old Clubhouse has destroyed in 1899 by a fire, but was resurrected in 1901 and has since served its purpose as a meeting place of golfers for over a century. There is a snooker room that has been there since 1901, and a recently refurbished dining room capable of accommodating 120 people.
Dormy House
With onsite accommodation at Dormby House, your Formby Golf Club experience just got better. Sleeping up to 10 people, the Dormy comprises 4 twin rooms and 2 single rooms. There are shared bathroom and shower facilities. Access to weekend tee-time packages (exclusive) are available to Dormy House visitors.
