If you are on a golfing break in Kerry, you won’t want to miss the opportunity to play Dooks – a truly magical location for a stunning golf course. Experience breathtaking views and a unique links challenge that golfers have enjoyed since 1889. Golf has been played in Dooks since 1889 which makes the course one of the oldest Golf Links in Ireland. For 100 years the links remained a steadfastly quirky, 9 holes monument to those early days as the members resisted all efforts at modernisation. Other golf attractions around County Kerry and County Cork include Tralee Golf Club, Castlemartyr Resort, Ballybunion and Old Head Links.
It was extended to eighteen holes in the 1970s under the guidance of Eddie Hackett. The course was further enhanced in 2002 by Martin Hawtree. The Club is renowned for its friendliness and invites all visitors to enjoy the unique atmosphere of the Clubhouse. Even though it was extensively remodelled great care was taken to ensure it retained its old-world charm. The warmth of the greeting you will receive at Dooks is unrivalled.
Environmentally, Dooks prides itself on the pristine surroundings in which the course is set. The flora, fauna and location on a promontory south of Dingle Bay sets the scene for some of the most beautiful golf in the world. For the golfer who is seeking a beautiful and tranquil environment to enjoy great Golf, Dooks presents a convincing case. Dooks is not as exposed as some Irish courses and features an amazing variety of gorse, heather and wildflowers, the “gentle” wind is never far away, and the narrow genuine sandy fairways and well-contoured greens offer you a real taste of traditional links golf at its very best. The Dooks golf course is similar in landscape and layout to Dingle Golf Links, the most westerly course in Europe, not far from Dooks.
As usual on traditional links courses, the front nine comprises of some tightly laid holes where accuracy is paramount. Although it lacks the towering bunkers of Ballybunion and Tralee, Dooks does require a hefty amount of imagination when attacking the green, for tight fairways often lead to small greens, or undulations that make you wish you’d taken more club from the tee. Dooks, although featuring a traditional links layout, digresses from the layout and style of most of its Irish and Scottish counterparts and the result is the creation of a stunning golf course in the remote Irish countryside. This uniqueness also applies to the backdrop. Locals say the surrounding mountains, including the McGillycuddy Reeks and the Slieve Mish, never look the same way twice, with different colours and shades almost every day. The same can be said about Dooks, where hollows and bumps between the dunes have been providing a singular Irish golf experience for more than a century.
The Clubhouse is all inclusive with Locker facilities for visiting golfers, a Pro-shop and Bar/Dining room. After your round why not relax and restore the energy levels! The bar and dining facilities offer visiting golfers the opportunity to relax in comfort and the opportunity to chat with the members. A menu which includes both light snacks and more substantial meals, all freshly prepared using local produce is available throughout the day.
Restaurant & Bar
Although it has been recently renovated, Dooks has managed to retain its old-world charm and quirkiness. Everyone is made to feel at home around the curved bar where people at one end of the bar can talk to people at the other. When you have a pint in Dooks you could be in any animated and friendly pub in Ireland. The restaurant offers a full service throughout the day. It has a wide variety of home cooked food with locally sourced produce. If you were to walk in with a fish, you had caught that day – the Chef would be happy to cook it for you! A selection of light snacks or more traditional meals is available throughout the day. For larger groups we will be delighted to help plan your day, just give us a call to discuss your requirements.
Pro Shop
Dooks has a well-equipped Pro Shop which carries all the leading labels. there you can purchase all types of golf accessories, gifts and avail of our rental facilities, such as trolley and buggy hire. Don’t forget to enquire about our Caddies, their knowledge is invaluable and a great help for first time players of the course. It is important that all intending visitors make reservations as early as possible and check in before play.
