County Kerry is home to world-class golf courses, including Dingle Golf Links, also known as Cean Sibéal. Just a few minutes from the regional town of Ballyferriter, Dingle links occupies a unique patch of land surrounded by Sybil Head, Brandon Mountain, the Blasket Islands, Slea Head and the Pilgrims’ Way. The Dingle Peninsula is one of south-west Ireland’s largest peninsulas and is situated along The Wild Atlantic Way; Cean Sibéal enjoys being Ireland’s most westerly golf club, indeed Europe’s most westerly golf club.
The Eddie Hackett and Christy O’Connor Jnr-designed golf course is an elegant 18-hole links track that blends into the landscape. Irishgolf.com said ‘If the legendary giants of Irish lore played golf, this might be where they’d play.’ Dingle Links is not as well known as other County Kerry courses such as Waterville Links, Ballybunion or Dooks, but it is a fantastic golf club and is considered a must-play golf course during any visit to The Wild Atlantic Way. If travelling from Cork, be sure to stop at Old Head Golf Links on your way to the Dingle Peninsula.
The Cean Sibéal golf course is a marvellous links track that supports views over the Dingle Peninsula and Irish countryside, including The Atlantic Ocean and nearby Blasket Mountains. A winding ‘burn’ meanders through the course, which was there long before golf designer Eddie Hackett shaped the links and Christy O’Connor Jnr added to it. The stream comes into play on 13 of the 18 holes and adds a uniquely ‘Dingle’ characteristic to it. The course is a natural links in that there wasn’t much earth moving happening when it was formed, which is a testament its prime location in Kerry.
The Irish culture is deeply rooted in County Kerry. It is noticeable in the Cean Sibéal (Gaelic) part of the name, but also on the golf course where each of the 18-holes has Gaelic names. The golf course is subject to frequent winds that can be ferocious when trying to play golf, but it adds to the reverence of golf in County Kerry. It can be played in combination as a 36-hole round which includes the nearby Dooks Golf Club or Waterville links, especially in summer when there is an extended period of daylight. The location of the golf course is what turns the most heads, combined with the fact that you are playing a golf course designed by the great Irish architect Eddie Hackett.
Practice Facilities
Being a traditional links golf course, Cean Sibéal doesn’t have a driving range. This a common trait in Ireland and Scotland with older golf courses as the land they occupy isn’t spacious, and there isn’t a great need for driving ranges. The Dingle Golf Club does have a putting green located next to the clubhouse for warm-up putting.
Clubhouse
Inside the spacious clubhouse, you will find the golf shop, which stocks a surprisingly large amount of clothing, equipment, accessories and memorabilia, which includes Dingle Links-branded merchandise. The restaurant is located on the top floor and features fantastic views over the Atlantic Ocean and surrounding countryside. The menu is seasonal and is created from local ingredients; be sure to stop by and enjoy a pint of Guinness with the locals.
