Located on the east coast of Ireland, just a 50-minute drive north of the capital Dublin is County Louth Golf Club, known commonly as Baltray. While the golf club was established in 1892, it wasn’t until 1938, when the golf course designed by Tom Simpson and Molly Gourlay opened for play. In 2003, Tom MacKenzie modernised the golf course with the most notable addition being new tee boxes which lengthened the golf course to current standards. County Louth is consistently rated in the Top 10 Golf Courses in Ireland, including #8 by Golf Digest. The Baltray Golf Club is situated in the historic Boyne Valley region just north of Drogheda, adjacent to the Boyne estuary, occupying prime links land; it is a favourite among amateurs and professionals alike.
Baltray Golf Course is laid out over prime unspoilt links land next to the Irish Sea. The Golf Course famously hosted The Irish Open in 2004 and 2009, where 2019 Open Champion Shane Lowry won The Irish Open as an amateur. The golf course offers towering sandhills, testing rough and a variety of golf holes that demands accuracy from tee to pin, with a great deal of strategy required. The golf course is famously one of Ireland’s pure links golf courses that provides a fair test of one’s golfing abilities.
The County Louth Golf Course is long by links standards at just over 7,000-yards. The length, combined with fairway and green undulations, as well as greens protected by deep pot bunkers creates the necessity for distance control. The greens are Baltray’s standout hallmark, with contours, tiers and runoffs wreaking havoc on visiting golfers. The golf course is playable by golfers of all levels with six separate tee boxes bringing down the overall length. County Louth is one of Ireland’s great links courses and has earnt its place among the east coast’s top courses which includes Royal County Down, The Island and The European Club.
Practice Facilities
The County Louth golf practice facilities are world-class, as expected from a championship venue. They boast two driving ranges, two putting greens, three chipping greens and a green with practice bunker. The short-game facility sits adjacent to the Clubhouse and is the perfect way to warm up for your round with pitches, bunker practice and chips from different rough cuts. One driving range is beside the first tee, with a putting green. The second driving range is isolated for those who wish to practice in peace.
Clubhouse
Baltray’s Clubhouse was originally a Golf Hotel that was built in 1928, but it was purchased by County Louth Golf Club in 1943 and converted into a clubhouse to complement the course. Inside, you will find newly built locker rooms, a reception and Pro Shop stocked with a wide range of equipment, accessories and apparel. The restaurant is located on the top level of Baltray’s Clubhouse; its menu showcases cuisine inspired by the close fishing village of Clogherhead with fish specials and seasonal produce produced each day. The quality of the restaurant was solidified when it won ‘the best golf club restaurant of the year 2017’. There is a snack and a-la-carte menu you can enjoy before or after your round.
