Residing Christchurch on New Zealand’s South Island, Clearwater Golf Club is the brainchild of John Darby and Bob Charles. Set amongst a residential estate, the Clearwater Golf Course is a championship course that has been welcoming members and visitors since 2002, with the New Zealand Open Championship held for two consecutive years at Clearwater in 2011 and 2012. Clearwater is no stranger to golf tournaments: it has hosted eight New Zealand PGA Championships and four New Zealand Women’s Opens. Located just a few minutes from Christchurch Airport, the golf club is easily accessible and the ideal way to start or end a New Zealand golf trip. We advise starting at Clearwater, before heading to Terrace Downs and further south to Cromwell Golf Club and Queenstown.
Designed as a resort-style parkland course, Clearwater Golf Course draws influence from Florida’s golf heritage. Arnold Palmer style bunkers work in conjunction with large lakes to protect greens, and wide fairways lead to tight approach shots protected by great flat-bottomed bunkers. Golfers can choose from up to six tee boxes on the course, which gives a level of playability to every calibre of golfer. Accessibility is enhanced by golf carts with GPS systems and electric trolleys to hire.
The Clearwater Golf Course plays over mostly flat terrain. Challenges come in the form of wind and water. Pin position and tee variations can be a deciding factor on your scorecard depending on wind conditions; with water being the dominant challenge to overcome. The key focus is on hitting the ball straight and with distance precision; avoiding water and greenside bunkers is a must at Clearwater Golf Club. Well-maintained year-round, Clearwater is a championship golf course that deserves to be part of any South Island golf holiday.
Clearwater Golf Club prides itself on the ideal experience from arrival to departure. The pro shop stocks brands suited for quality, service and prestige, which is reflected by the knowledgeable staff at the club. Golf clubs, shoes and other rentals are available with leading brands such as Footjoy, Titleist and Ping, while golfers can enjoy club fitting and repairs at the Pro Shop.
Inside the clubhouse, a restaurant with commanding views over the eighteenth green and nearby lake provides indoor and outdoor sitting areas. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner; the restaurant serves seasonal menus with plenty of variety. Practice facilities at Clearwater Golf Club consist of a large putting green, full-length driving range and short-game pitching area with a sand bunker.
