Located in Australia’s Bass Strait, situated halfway between the mainland and the island state of Tasmania is King Island, containing Cape Wickham Golf Links and Ocean Dunes. Ranked by Golf Digest as the 24th Best Golf Course in the world in 2016, Cape Wickham is a seaside links golf course as enchanting as it is remote. Access to King Island is limited, the most popular travel routes are ocean cruises and chartered flights. Since opening in 2015, Cape Wickham has risen to the top of the world stage as one of the most sought-after golf courses in Australia. Golfers often combine Cape Wickham with other Tasmanian golf courses including Barnbougle Dunes & Lost Farm on Tasmania and St Andrews Beach or The National Golf Club’s Old and Moonah golf courses. Cape Wickham Golf Course is located on the northern tip of King Island in the Bass Strait. The Island is subject to large swells and heavy winds coming from the Great Australian Bight and Antarctica. The weather can change instantly, going from sunshine to sweeping squalls in a matter of minutes. The seaside location and variable winds at Cape Wickham resembles the great golf courses found in the United Kingdom and Ireland such as Turnberry Ailsa, Waterville Golf Links and Tralee Golf Club. Designed by American Mike DeVries and Australian Darius Oliver, Cape Wickham Golf Links is dramatic, rugged and beautiful, topped off with a massive lighthouse that comprises the golf course’s logo. One of the best assets that Cape Wickham Golf Club has is that its open layout allows for limitless shot-making capabilities. Tees, fairways and greens are all seeded with fescue grass that is likened to the traditional links golf courses in Scotland and Ireland.
The par-72 golf course features everything associated with modern links golf courses including elevation changes, wild fescue grass, deep pot bunkers and towering dunes that are synonymous with great seaside links golf courses. The essence of Cape Wickham is found in its location more than anything else. The gradient of the golf course as it twists and turns along the coast, allowing the lay of the land to shape the holes as the surf crashes along the outer holes comprises the King Island golf experience. Every hole on the golf course has ocean views with no residential development to be seen. The unrivalled location of Cape Wickham makes travelling to King Island a very attractive idea. Together with the nearby Ocean Dunes golf course, Cape Wickham is a must-play golf destination best accessed by chartered planes or boats.
Practice Facilities
Practice facilities at Cape Wickham incorporate more of a links-style set-up. A driving range is absent, but in its place is a fantastic short-game pitching and chipping area, as well as a twelve-hole putting course that provides a great simulation of what to expect on the links course.
Clubhouse
The clubhouse doubles as the Resort’s restaurant, so it is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. King Island is famous for its remoteness that marries well with abundant seafood and quality agriculture. At the Cape Wickham golf clubhouse, you will find internationally acclaimed beef, as well as local crayfish (Southern Rock Lobster), and locally produced cheese. Revered Tasmanian wines and beverages round out the list to ensure you are in for a pre or post-round treat. The Cape Wickham golf clubhouse also features a well-stocked pro-shop full of Cape Wickham-branded merchandise and a wide range of accessories.
Accommodation
Visiting golfers can stay at Cape Wickham on Tasmania’s King Island. The Resort features 16 villa-style accommodation units with each room boasting unparalleled views across the golf course and the Cape Wickham Lighthouse in the distance. Each room features a private deck for evening sundowners, an ensuite, LCD T.V, air conditioning & heating, and luxury hotel amenities. The bedding is set up to accommodation singles, doubles, twin-share or triple share if needed. The accommodation style is reminiscent of Cabot Links Resort in Canada, with untouched coastline, an oceanside links golf course and level of remoteness that reminds visitors that King Island is a bucket-list paradise for golfers.
