Well over 100 years old, Brora Golf Club in the Scottish Highlands is a traditional seaside links course of the finest quality. Wedged on flat terrain between the North Sea to the east, the town of Brora to the West, and rolling mountains looming along the entire western skyline, Brora is a marvel for its sights, humility and quality. Brora is just north of Golspie Golf Club, another Highland gem designed by James Braid. The course is uniquely Scottish in that there are fences around the greens to stop the local sheep and fauna from impeding on golfers’ rounds, though they are allowed free-roam everywhere else. Since its inception in 1891, Brora Golf Club has maintained a high reputation for Scottish links golf and remains one of the country’s best golf courses. If playing Brora Golf Course, we recommend also visiting Royal Dornoch, Castle Stuart (Cabot Highlands) and Fortrose & Rosemarkie Golf Clubs.
The Brora Golf Course features some of the finest fescue grass in Scotland and provides golfers’ the opportunity to play alongside local livestock. Pot bunkers, undulating fairways and greens, Brora defines Scottish links golf, and maybe even Highlands golf at the same time. Subject to fierce winds from the North Sea and over the mountains from the West, Brora is a different course when each season is on display. It provides the perfect balance between a true challenge and breath-taking scenery, so golfers of all abilities will find a warm welcome.
Characterising links golf, the layout is a traditional route of out & back, with the opening nine hugging the North Sea coastline. The greens are compact and lightning fast, whilst dangerous run-off zones will keep you on your toes for your entire round, made even more of a challenge with the frequent winds. It is a favourite of many professionals and golfing greats, but the glory is that Brora can be played and thoroughly enjoyed by all golfers as it is not an overly long layout, being a traditional Scottish seaside links golf course.
Brora Golf Club’s facilities are rustic; its clubhouse sits above the eighteenth green and first tee with views over the North Sea. Food is served in the restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner whilst there is also a bar and cosy lounge that overlooks the golf course northwards. The restaurant and bar are located on the top floor of the clubhouse, whilst the pro shop is on the lower level. The Professional Shop at Brora Golf Club comes fully stocked with Bora-branded clothing and accessories, as well as some major brands.
Be sure to stop by before or after your round to pick up the essential for the course or souvenirs for your loved ones. The Pro Shop also offers a full range of repairs that come in handy when you’re in the middle of a golf holiday. They offer re-gripping and re-shafting for clubs, as well as some of the best prices on clubs through their membership of Foremost Golf.
Practice facilities at Brora Golf Club consist of a putting green standing directly below the clubhouse, and a short-game pitching area, as well as some hitting nets. There is not a driving range at the golf club. This is because it is a traditional links golf course and warming up on a full-length driving range is not optimal for the type of course, so putting and short-game warm-up areas are utilised at Brora.
