Designed by the three-time Australian Open winner Carnegie Clark this stunning south-east Queensland golf course is a must for any visiting golfer. Brisbane Golf Club is one of the country’s oldest. It was established as a club in 1896 but relocated in 1904. Well over a century old, Brisbane Golf Club numerous tournaments including the Queensland PGA Championship, and the Isuzu Queensland Open a record 21 times. The Golf Course is ranked within Golf Digests’ Top 100 Australian courses. The Brisbane Golf Club course is the only in Australia featuring greens of Ultradwarf Bermuda grass, and a three-year green replacement was completed in 2015. To put that in perspective, 700 clubs in the United States have that green surface. The golf course has 73 bunkers littered throughout which are shaped with clean-cut edges and wide, flat bottoms. Alister MacKenzie influenced the course shape during his time in Queensland; the bunkers are reminiscent of Melbourne’s famous Sandbelt region and closer golf courses such as Royal Queensland Golf Club.
The golf course was revamped in 2007 by Ross Watson who improved its and sought to modernise it. The intriguing part of the golf course is that there are an additional three holes, 19, 20 and 21. These three holes allow for the Club to use different golf holes in rotation as required. The golf course features many lakes, ponds and streams, with blind tee shots, forested areas and lush bushland. A round at Brisbane Golf Club is a must if visiting the city.
The practise facilities are fantastic with a 270-metre driving range with full grass bays. Golfers can practice their short-game at the expansive chipping area that has a bunker. It also has a separate putting green and three spare holes that double as a practice area.
The golf shop at Brisbane Golf Club is open every day and stocks the best golf brands. They have competitive pricing and reserve the ability to request items they do not have in-store, so call ahead if you need anything specific. The demonstration clubs on offer provide visiting golfers with the ability to trial a wide range of equipment from the pro shop. The clubhouse also features change rooms and a full-service restaurant that serves fantastic cuisine seven days a week.
