Located just minutes from the regional town of Kerikeri and its domestic airport, the Bay of Islands Golf Club is open year-round. The Bay of Islands Golf Club has a long history as a golf club since its conception in 1936, although the first nine only opened in 1974, with its second nine opening in 1977. The course was designed and constructed by the club members, which makes it unique in the sense that locals both designed and created the golf course. The site is set on hilly terrain with a sub-tropical climate that provides a wonderful golfing experience for golfers of every level. The Bay of Islands Golf Club is not far from Kauri Cliffs and Waitangi Golf Club, where the original Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840.
The Bay of Islands Golf Course is classified as a parkland route that is framed by hilly terrain and tree-lined fairways, although the course itself plays along mostly flat holes. The result is a picturesque 18-hole route with more tree varieties than most other golf courses you encounter elsewhere. Golfers will experience sharp doglegs, narrow fairway-to-green approaches, and a few lakes.
Laid out on the side of a hill with a valley running through, the Bay of Islands golf course is classified as rural, although it has views of nearby residential buildings that rise out of the hills. The various tee boxes to choose from adds another element of fun to the course, with large wastelands separating fairways from tees and long carries required on some holes. The practise facilities at the Bay of Islands Golf Club are limited to a putting green adjacent to the clubhouse. There is no driving range or practice bunkers due to a lack of space, but you can practice your putt before your round. The golf shop has a PGA professional who will provide you with all necessary information about the course, hire equipment and any questions you might have.
