Rated in Golf Digest’s Top 50 Courses in the Wolrd, Barnbougle Resort’s Lost Farm golf course is legendary. The course sits in The Top 10 courses by the Golf Australia Magazine. Lost Farm is the newest course at Barnbougle Resort, opening in 2004. The course was designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw of U.S. based design company Coore and Crenshaw. The duo has completed other renowned courses such as Streamsong Resort, Cabot Cliffs, and more recently Bandon Dunes Sheep Ranch course. The Lost Farm golf course at Barnbougle Resort resides in Australia’s island state of Tasmania, on the north-east coast. Various images supplied by Gary Lisbon.
The ocean-side links golf course is unique in that there are 20 holes of golf, totalling a par of 78. The 13th and 18th holes have an additional “13A, 18A” that serve as additional par-3’s. The 20-hole course comprises of prime links land with both a traditional Irish influence and a uniquely Australian aesthetic. Native grasses and distinctly Australian scrub define the course’s topography. Huge waste areas requiring long carries and bunkers add to the excitement at Lost Farm.
Designed with a minimalist approach, Lost Farm is moulded into the terrain. Fierce sea breezes sweep across Tasmania from the Great Australian Bight and the Antarctic, making golf at Barnbougle as authentic as the great British Isles courses. The natural weave of the course is more distinguishable than The Dunes course, as the golf course meanders around natural features and appears less sculpted than The Dunes. The golf complex lies adjacent to the Forester River and features Tasmanian hinterland panoramas as well as views over the Bass Strait, with the entire complex being wedged between the two bodies of water. Practice Facilities
Barnbougle’s Dunes course has top-quality golf amenities including a range of putting greens, full-length driving range and a chipping green with bunkers. A small fee is required for range balls. Teaching professionals are available on request and are ideal for learning about how to adapt to links golf if you are visiting for a few days.
Clubhouse
The Dunes Clubhouse overlooks the ninth and 18th holes and Barnbougle Beach. The modern building features a fully licensed bar and restaurant that serves contemporary cuisine sourced from local ingredients, open from breakfast to dinner each day. Elsewhere in the clubhouse are female and male changing rooms and the Pro Shop. Inside the Pro Shop, golfers can either stock up on the essentials or browse for Barnbougle memorabilia to take home.
Accommodation
The Dunes at Barnbougle offers three accommodation types including Ocean Villas, Cottages or Bunker Villas. Each type of room is tailored to groups of varying sizes from one-bedrooms to four bedrooms and ranges from 3.5-star to 5-star luxury. The Resort also has another restaurant, sports bar, spa and diverse activities for indulgent stays.
