Situated in a picturesque valley in Arrowtown, within New Zealand’s South Island, lies Arrowtown Golf Club. The club is open year-round and actively encourages visitors. The 18-hole course has superb views of snow-capped mountains in winter and colourful trees in most months. Arrowtown lies in central Otago, just 20-minutes from the adventure capital of the world: Queenstown. The golf course at Arrowtown Golf Club is too short to host a championship tournament. What the golf course lacks in length, it makes up for in scenery. The fairways thread through little valleys, gorges and hillocks, while boulders rise from the ground everywhere, you look. Situated at the bottom of a valley, surrounded by steep mountains, the course spends more time in half-light and shadow than seaside golf courses do; the result is visually spellbinding. Golfers who play seaside links courses or classic parkland courses will find a very different experience at Arrowtown where the golf course appears carved out of the mountains.
With a par of 70, the Arrowtown golf course brings its charm to each hole which is individually named. The first opens with ‘The Race,’ a par-three 162-metre runner that leads to a par-five named ‘Johnny Walker,’ before a series of par four’s. The golf course has two separate nines split by a road called Centennial Avenue, with the clubhouse in between. This allows you the opportunity to grab a snack halfway through your round. Water comes into play on the eighteenth named ‘Lady Fayre.’
The clubhouse at Arrowtown Golf Clubhouse was originally built in 1956 but was upgraded in 2001 while the course had an irrigation upgrade. The clubhouse offers spectacular views over the front nine and surrounding mountains. Inside, you will find a restaurant open for breakfast and lunch. The clubhouse also features a Pro Shop where you can hire rental equipment such as golf carts, electric trolleys and rental clubs. There is a practice putting green at the front of the clubhouse.
