Located just 20 minutes from Tasmania’s capital Hobart, 7 Mile Beach Golf Course is a brand new development started by local tour professional Matthew Goggin. The golf course is designed by Mike Clayton and his associates Mike DeVries and Frank Pont. The new golf course has not yet opened but is expected to open in late 2024 and construction has begun. Once completed, the links golf course will enrichen Hobart’s golf scene with nearby Royal Hobart and Tasmania Golf Clubs currently the only acclaimed courses in the area. Location is everything for 7 Mile Beach Golf Club; it is a ten-minute drive from the airport, four minutes from Tasmania Golf Club and ten minutes from Royal Hobart Golf Club. The golf course will be a public facility open to all golfers. Green fees and visitor information is yet to be published.
Flying from Melbourne takes just one hour and the drive into Hobart from the airport or 7 Mile Beach is very easy at just 20 minutes. With plenty of non-golfing activities to do in Hobart, husbands and wives will cherish this southern destination. Activities you can do in a day from Hobart include Mount Wellington lookout (Kunanyi), MONA Museum, Port Arthur, Bruny Island, South Arm Hikes and Salamanca Market. Hobart is a gastronomic hub, simply pop into the iconic weekly Salamanca Market every Saturday morning or head to Salamanca place for a wide array of restaurants and bars. Notable restaurants in Hobart include Frank’s Argentinian, Sonny, The Glass House, ALOFT, The Agrarian Kitchen, Templo, Mures and Ti Ama. Nearby Wineries you must try include Frogmore Creek, Puddleduck, Pooley Winery and Derwent Estate.
The geography and topography that comprises 7 Mile Beach draw direct comparisons to traditional links golf courses found in the United Kingdom. Occupying prime real estate the new 7 Mile Beach Golf Course occupies a narrow spit of land that separates Tiger Head Bay and Five Mile Beach on the peninsula’s north shore. The two bodies of water are connected by a narrow estuary that is remarkably similar to Bridport’s estuary where the famous Lost Farm Golf Course resides at Barnbougle on Tasmania’s North Coast. Climate-wise, the best time to visit 7 Mile Beach is between October – March during Tasmania’s summer. The rest of the year can be fickle; not dissimilar to Scottish weather.
The site offers uninterrupted views over Tiger Head Bay to the wider Frederick Henry Bay with distant hills visible all around including those surrounding the Derwent River, Eagle-Hawk Neck and South Arm Conservation Area. With natural sand dunes and rolling dunescape, 7 Mile Beach Golf Course is an ambitious task to create a long-standing golf course of international acclaim from scratch. The site is naturally gifted with the only neighbours as dolphins and distant hills. As designer Mike Clayton put it, ‘the problem is if we’ll ever really know if we have the best routing.’
The 7 Mile Beach golf course and facilities are still under construction. This section will be updated closer to scheduled opening in the second half of 2024.
