The Ryder Cup was first contested in 1927, when a team of American professionals travelled to Worcester Country Club in Massachusetts to face Great Britain. Named after English businessman Samuel Ryder, who donated the famous gold trophy, the event quickly grew into one of golf’s greatest spectacles.
Originally a match between the USA and Great Britain (later Great Britain & Ireland), the format expanded in 1979 to include all of Europe, a change that transformed the competition. Since then, the Ryder Cup has produced some of the sport’s most iconic moments — from Seve Ballesteros and José María Olazábal’s legendary partnership, to Europe’s “Miracle at Medinah” comeback in 2012.
Held every two years, alternating between Europe and the United States, the Ryder Cup transcends golf. It’s a celebration of national pride, team spirit, and sporting drama — with television audiences and fans on-site creating an atmosphere more akin to football than a traditional golf tournament.
The Ryder Cup is unique in golf because it is entirely team-based, showcasing formats rarely seen in the professional game:
Foursomes (Alternate Shot): Two-man teams play one ball, alternating shots until the hole is complete. Precision and partnership are essential.
Fourballs (Better Ball): Each of the two players plays their own ball, with the best score counting for the team. Aggressive play often leads to spectacular birdies.
Singles Matches: On the final day, all 12 players from each side compete one-on-one in match play. Every point is critical, often leading to dramatic finishes.
Scoring is simple: one point is awarded for a win, half a point for a halved match. With 28 points available, 14½ points secures victory, while 14 points is enough for the defending team to retain the Cup.
The format ensures that every match matters — one missed putt or one brilliant recovery can swing momentum and change the entire outcome.
Adare Manor is set to make its Ryder Cup debut in 2027, but it already carries the reputation of being one of Europe’s premier luxury golf destinations.
The course, originally designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. in the 1990s, was extensively redeveloped by Tom Fazio in 2017. The redesign elevated it to world-class status, with immaculate conditioning and strategic design tailored for championship golf. Wide fairways give players room off the tee, but precision is demanded around the heavily contoured greens, many of which are protected by water hazards and bunkering.
Key highlights include:
Signature Water Features: The River Maigue runs through the estate, influencing several holes and adding drama to approach shots.
Modern Conditioning: State-of-the-art SubAir systems under every green ensure championship-level surfaces year-round, regardless of Ireland’s weather.
Match Play Drama: With risk-and-reward par 5s and challenging par 3s, the course is ideally suited to the pressure and excitement of Ryder Cup match play.
Beyond the course, Adare Manor itself is a destination: a five-star resort that combines old-world grandeur with modern luxury, offering Michelin-star dining, opulent rooms, and a world-class spa. Together, the estate and course create an unrivalled stage for the Ryder Cup.
