SYDNEY PRE-TOUR COURSES
New South Wales Golf Club
New South Wales Golf Club is a landmark of Australian golf. Designed by Dr Alister MacKenzie, the layout uses the natural coastal contours of La Perouse to create a strategic and visually compelling test. Winds shift throughout the day, forcing players to think carefully about shot shape, landing areas and trajectory. The par-3 6th and the run of holes along the headland are among the most photographed in the country. NSW remains a genuine championship experience and an essential stop for visiting golfers.
The Lakes Golf Club
The Lakes is a superb modern championship venue and a multiple host of the Australian Open. Wide fairways lead into demanding green complexes that favour confident iron play and well-managed course strategy. Water hazards appear throughout the layout, particularly on the closing stretch, adding both challenge and excitement. The Lakes is known for excellent conditioning year-round and offers a strong, fair test appreciated by golfers of all levels.
MAIN TOUR COURSES
Royal Melbourne Golf Club – West Course
Royal Melbourne West is the benchmark for Australian golf and one of Alister MacKenzie’s greatest designs. The course combines strategic width with world-leading green complexes, demanding thoughtful positioning from tee to green. Fairways are firm and expansive, yet each hole presents a preferred angle that rewards precision. The bunkering is striking and purposeful, and the natural flow of the land makes every hole engaging. It remains the gold standard for championship golf in Australia.
Victoria Golf Club
Victoria Golf Club delivers a refined Sandbelt experience with rolling terrain, striking bunkering and greens that encourage smart, creative play. The routing is beautifully balanced, offering variety without unnecessary difficulty. Subtle breaks and fast putting surfaces demand a confident touch, and the course’s rhythm creates an enjoyable test from start to finish. Victoria is known for its welcoming character and classic architecture, making it a favourite among visiting golfers.
Kingston Heath Golf Club
Kingston Heath is one of the most complete championship layouts in the country. The fairways are firm and impeccably presented, while the bunkering is among the finest anywhere—both visually impressive and strategically exacting. Despite limited elevation changes, the course uses contour and subtlety to full effect. Approaches must be precise, and the greens reward disciplined course management. Consistently ranked among the world’s best, Kingston Heath is a masterclass in thoughtful design.
Ocean Dunes – King Island
Ocean Dunes offers a rugged and exhilarating links-style challenge shaped directly by the wind and coastline. Fairways roll through tall dunes and natural valleys, with several holes playing right alongside the water. The layout rewards imaginative shot-making and confident driving, and the raw beauty of the site elevates the entire experience. Paired with Cape Wickham, it forms one of the great two-course destinations in the Southern Hemisphere.
Cape Wickham Links – King Island
Cape Wickham Links is a world-ranked modern classic set on the northern tip of King Island. The routing moves seamlessly between dunes, cliff tops and ocean edges, with the Bass Strait visible from almost every hole. Fast-running turf and natural contours reward creativity and well-thought-out strategy. Iconic moments include the par-3 11th across the water and the dramatic closing stretch along the shoreline. Wickham is widely considered one of the most memorable rounds in Australia.
Barnbougle Lost Farm – Tasmania
Lost Farm, designed by Bill Coore, brings an expansive and varied style of links golf to Tasmania’s northeast coast. The routing features broad fairways, bold green complexes and multiple strategic lines of play from tee to green. Elevated tees and rolling dunes create visually striking holes, while firm turf encourages imagination on approaches and around the greens. Many consider Lost Farm the equal of The Dunes, reinforcing Barnbougle as an elite golf destination.
Barnbougle Dunes – Tasmania
Barnbougle Dunes, by Tom Doak and Mike Clayton, is a world-renowned links shaped naturally into the dune landscape. Fairways are wide yet strategically demanding, offering preferred angles that reward smart positioning. The greens are firm, undulating and best approached with creativity rather than power. Every hole feels distinct, and the layout’s rhythm makes it an inspiring walk. The Dunes remains one of the great pure links experiences in world golf.
7 Mile Beach – Tasmania
7 Mile Beach, designed by Mike Clayton and Mike DeVries, opened in December 2025 and represents the newest wave of Australian links golf. Built on sandy dunes near Hobart, the course features wide playing corridors, firm surfaces and greens that encourage inventive shot-making. Constantly shifting winds alter the personality of the layout day to day. With sweeping views over Frederick Henry Bay and a natural, uncluttered feel, 7MB provides an exciting final round to complete the journey.

Customisations
January is peak summer in Australia. Conditions can vary between cities and coastal regions, but overall expect warm, dry and comfortable golfing weather.
Melbourne:
Warm to hot days ranging 22–30°C (72–86°F), with occasional hotter spells. Evenings are generally mild.
King Island & Barnbougle (Tasmania’s North-East Coast):
Cooler coastal climate with steady winds, generally 17–24°C (62–75°F). Layers are recommended due to ocean breezes.
Hobart:
Mild and sunny conditions around 18–26°C (64–79°F). Very pleasant for sightseeing.
A lightweight golf wardrobe is ideal. We recommend sun protection, a hat, and a warm layer for early tee-times on the coast.
Many of Australia’s top courses, especially in the Sandbelt and coastal regions, were designed for walking.
Carts are limited because:
The routing and terrain suit walking paths, not cart paths.
Many clubs prioritise course conditioning and the traditional experience.
Natural dunes and narrow corridors make cart use impractical.
Carts are available at Cape Wickham and Lost Farm, and at some others with medical clearance.
Most international travellers require an electronic travel authority (ETA):
USA: ETA required – available through the Australian ETA app.
UK: ETA required for leisure travel.
New Zealand: NZ citizens do not require a visa.
Canada, Europe, Asia: ETA required for most nationalities.
Processing is usually quick, but we recommend applying 4–6 weeks before travel.
