The Sunningdale Golf Club has had a legendary status for well over a half century. Both the Old Course, designed by Willie Park Junior, and the New Course, designed by Harry Colt, have been renowned for their innovate inland designs and the championship level by which they reside. The Sunningdale Golf Club has enjoyed renown on its Old Course especially, having hosted many major tournaments over the years, and those fortunate enough to visit will know they are playing the same courses where legends have made their mark. The golf club sits just 20-minutes’ drive away from Heathrow Airport, and just 30-miles from London city centre; it is one of the most accessible elite golf courses in the United Kingdom. Golf Course Information

Sunningdale’s New Course was designed by Colt and Morrison and opened in 1923, on heathland including small copses and broom. The first five holes were more or less as now, although the track of the first and eighteenth holes had to be reversed.  Colt’s sixth hole played down the line of today’s ninth hole, though along its left-hand ridge to a green over the path down to Valleys End and the Brickmaker’s Arms. Holes 7-10 were hilly and are in today’s woods, right of the tenth hole on the Old. The tenth hole was played from the hill above, onto today’s tenth green, and the last eight holes were much the same as current, although the thirteenth was fifty yards longer, and other green locations have been altered.

Sunningdale’s New Course has fewer encroaching trees than the old course and enables longer drivers to really attack the ball. Having said that, the course record was held by Jack Nicklaus at 67, which is a true testament to the challenge it presents as a par-70 course. This leaves one to think where the obstacles are if not the massive birch, pine and oak trees that line Sunningdale’s Old Course: the answer is in the greens. Imaginatively contoured to perfection, the greens are the New Course’s biggest challenge and shiniest jewel in its crown. Coupled with The Old Course, a round of 36 holes in one day at Sunningdale Golf Club amounts to one of the greatest single day golfing experiences you could have.
