Nestled on the north side of Monterey Bay, just a 45-minute drive from Monterey and Pebble Beach, lives Pasatiempo Golf Course. It overlooks the Pacific Ocean, and is a ten-minute drive from Santa Cruz town. Pasatiempo was designed by world-renowned golf architect Alister MacKenzie. Even though MacKenzie also designed Augusta National and Cypress Point, Pasatiempo was his favourite layout and where he made his American home, which still borders the sixth fairway. Today, this historic top 100 course is a semi-private golf club that sets aside certain tee times each day for public play.
They also received a Golf Digest Green Star Environmental Award for its measures in dealing with drought; but Pasatiempo inked a 30-year deal to bring recycled water to the course saving over 40 million gallons of freshwater annually. A storage tank, filtration station and pump station was constructed behind the 13th green. We recommend you experience Pasatiempo as part of a Monterey golf package that includes Quail Lodge, Spyglass Hill, The Links at Spanish Bay, Poppy Hills and Pebble Beach Golf Links.
Opening for play in 1929, Pasatiempo offers golfers an unusual difference in tempos from the front to the back nine. The front features straight holes lined with local trees, whilst the back winds around the coast with complex bunkering and deep, intimidating ravines. Its encapsulating layout and demanding thoughtfulness provides all golfers with something to enjoy, regardless of their scorecard. The course layout features hilly terrain to add to the eclectic mix of ravines, bunkers and trees, which simply adds to the memories; it deserves two rounds. Pasatiempo is legendary not only because of the icon who designed it, but because the use of land is so expertly crafted that the opportunities for shots are limitless; its fame deserves every inch of merit.
From greens that have challenged generations of golfers including Bobby Jones, Ken Venturi, Juli Inkster, and Tiger Woods, to rich golf history and breathtaking scenery, Pasatiempo delivers a memorable golf experience; it is truly one of the finest championship golf courses in the world. Tom Doak in 2006 was entrusted to restore the course to its former glory and the job he did was phenomenal. This course has hosted the Western Intercollegiate for the past 65 years and features the top college players in the world. Pasatiempo has hosted USGA Championships including the 1986 U.S. Women’s Amateur and the 2004 U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur.
Practice Facility
A professional practice facility — with large putting and chipping greens and multiple bunkers — is located next to the first tee. This facility will help you ready your putting, sand play, and chipping game. The driving range is located near the first green and is available for use by members and guests. Shuttle service is available from the first tee to the driving range.
The Hollins House & The Tap Room
The Hollins House restaurant features beautiful, sweeping views of the Monterey Bay and Santa Cruz. The building was constructed in 1929 for decorated amateur golfer and Pasatiempo developer Marion Hollins. It is now home to one of the area’s finest dining destinations. Californian-inspired cuisine is meticulously prepared by Executive Chef John Paul Lechtenberg, as featured in the GoodTimes and Edible Monterey, uses ingredients grown in the nearby garden, and fresh goods from the abundant local farmers markets. Seasonal menus are complimented by an international wine list, offering over 70 selections, including several boutique producers from the Santa Cruz Mountains. The Tap Room offers fireside dining, classic cocktails, and daily Happy Hour specials. Exceptional service is a testament to the tradition of generous hospitality started by Marion Hollins nearly a century ago.
MacKenzie Bar & Grill
Named in honour of the legendary golf course architect Alister MacKenzie, the MacKenzie Bar & Grill restaurant is located within Pasatiempo’s clubhouse. MacKenzie Bar & Grill offers a postcard setting for casual dining. Known best for its beautiful view of the Monterey Bay, MacKenzie also offers favourable dishes such as the Salmon B.L.T., Santa Fe Chicken Salad, house made soups, and daily specials from the head chef. Breakfast is served daily from 08.00 until 16.00, and lunch from 10.30 to 16.00. Beginning at 16.00, they have a special happy hour menu that includes discounted appetizers, house wines, drinks and local draft beers. The wrap-around balcony is also dog friendly.
